Record Californian Cheese Production
Record Californian cheese production: California's total cheese production set an all-time high for the state in 2005, surpassing 2 billion pounds. The U.S. state saw a 7.1% increase in total cheese production in 2005 compared to the previous year, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), nearly three times the production growth reported nationally (2.6%) by the Department of Agriculture.
"California's dairy industry is one of the largest agricultural forces in the state and a growing supplier of dairy products nationwide," said Stan G Andre, chief executive officer of the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) "In 2004 alone, California's dairy business generated $47.4 billion in economic activity and created more than 434,000 full-time jobs in California," he said, citing a recent economic impact study on the California dairy industry. The total amount of cheese produced reached 2.14 billion lbs. The state has several of the world's largest cheese plants and produces one out of every 5 lbs of cheese made in the United States.
